De Stijl (1917-1931) was a casual art organization of architects, painters and sculptors. It was involved with characteristics of Neo – Plasticism and Dada. De Stijl movement was founded by Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931). the key members included painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), sculptor Georges Vantongerloo (1886-1965), and architect Jacobus Oud (1890-1963). De Stijl is an art movement, they share a common style and purpose. Even though they don’t come from the same country, but they all share the same theme.

Rule: • Only geometric shapes may be used; ignore natural form and color. • Main com positional elements to be straight lines or rectangular areas. • Surfaces should be rectangular planes or prisms. • No curves, no diagonals, no circles. • Choose only primary colors (red, blue, yellow), plus black, grey and white. • No symmetry: instead, strive for strong asymmetrical. • Balance is attained by relationships between geometrical motifs. • In addition, bold colors should balance bold direct lines.
Manifesto: In 16 January 2006, Theo van Doesburg and the members of the art group De Stijl has signed the manifesto. The manifesto all together has 9 main rules. According to the first part of the manifesto, “There is an old and new consciousness of time, The old is connected with the individual, The new is connected with the universal, The struggle of the individual against the universal is reviling itself in the world-war as well as in the art of the present day.” This part of the manifesto is the De Stijl uphold spirit. This manifesto was published on magazine and this had been signed by all the collaborators. By looking at their artworks, they have rules such as the only colors that were allowed were primary hues and black and white only. They also simplified everything to vertical and horizontal.

What was the time period?
De Stiji started from 1917 and ended in 1931. During that time period, World War I just ended. World War I was began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. This movement was started by some Dutch artist to respond the honor of World War I and the wish to remake the society.

The De Stijl (The Style) was originated in Amsterdam with a group of Dutch painter, sculptor and architect. De Stijl was founded to respond the honor of World War I. They were a casual art group that use art elements like lines, shapes ad colors. It was a rich country, because they were responding the honor of World War I. People were turning from poor to rich.
