When and why?
This artwork was painted in 1921. There were two current events that were happening the world that I think had bigger impacts on this artwork. Firstly, De Stijl movement was formed after World War I that has the purpose of responding the honor and the spirit of remaking a peaceful society. That’s why this movement was founded. Secondly, this artwork was created after the artist Piet Mondrian founded De Stijl with Theo van Doesburg. As I mentioned before, this artwork also has the purpose of letting people know about De Stijl.

Style
Piet Mondrian created this artwork with abstract painting for which he is best known. He combined the style of cubism and futurism into his movement De Stijl. De Stijl has rules like using primary colors, simple lines, and simple shapes. In Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray, and Blue there are qualities that make it De Stijl. Firstly, primary colors like red, yellow black, gray and blue. Secondly, there are horizontal and vertical black lines. Lastly, it used shapes like squares and rectangle. This artwork had totally showed De Stijl.

This is a composition abstract artwork. This artwork used primary colors like yellow, blue, gray, black and red. Piet Mondrian named this artwork by the colors. This artwork is also a composition of vertical and horizontal black lines that formed different sizes of rectangles or squares.
Formal qualities
By looking through this art work, it has used three of the art elements colors, shape and lines, which are all the rules for De Stijl. Piet Mondrian had used the primary colors in this artwork. In this artwork, the composition is formed by colors, shapes and lines. It gives the audience both simple and difficult feeling. The elements make audiences feel like it’s really easy because they are just squares. However, when the audience stand from the artist’s perspective, it’s actually really hard to arrange those elements in this composition. Piet Mondrian had made wonderful decision on the arrangement of this art piece. Lastly, this artwork was made out of oil on canvas. Oil on canvas is usually used for paint landscape or portrait that blends. I wonder why Piet Mondrian used oil on canvas to paint this piece of art just with primary colors.
